Google Chrome is one of the most used web browsers around the world. For December 2021, Google has released a security update for the said browser that upgrades the Chrome version to 96.0.4664.93. Since this is a security update, no new features accompany it.

Chrome 96 was earlier released in November 2021, which was an upgrade from Chrome 95. However, in this case, the major build remains unchanged.

This update fixes a total of 22 vulnerabilities, out of which 18 are deemed to be of high importance.

We strongly recommend that you upgrade your Chrome version using the following guide, or you may install it on your device (PC, Android, iOS, MacOS, Linux) using the given links below. You may also use the offline installer to install Google Chrome on a PC with no internet connection.

Since Microsoft shifted from a 6-week release cycle to a 4-week release cycle, they also introduced a new channel – the Extended Stable channel – which is an 8-week release cycle. This channel has also been updated with version 96.0.4664.93.

The Extended Stable channel is only available for enterprise users on Windows and Mac and can be enabled using the enterprise policies. During the first 4 weeks of the cycle, both Stabel and Extended Stable channels receive the same updates. After this duration, bi-weekly updates are shipped to the Extended Stable channel.

Let us now show you how you can upgrade your current Google Chrome to the latest version, or install it from scratch.

Final Thoughts

This Chrome release brings in no new features to the browser, thus we would understand why many of you would not be excited to upgrade just yet.

However, we still emphasize that you do upgrade your Chrome browser to the latest version available, as this one is a pure security update, and fixes critical vulnerabilities.

Google believes that if they publish the complete details of those vulnerabilities before the majority of the users upgrade their builds, these could be exploited by the attackers. This restriction by Google clearly states just how sensitive these vulnerabilities could be.
