Microsoft Edge 102 Released With Security Fixes But No Major Features

Microsoft Edge GenericMicrosoft Edge Generic

As on schedule following Google Chrome 102, Microsoft Edge has also been updated to version 102, with the complete version 102.0.1245.30. Similar to Chrome, Edge now also follows a 4-week release cycle, instead of 6 weeks. This was implemented earlier to bring out frequent changes to the web browser and patch up any vulnerabilities before they could be exploited.

With that, we are seeing some drawbacks, as this release of Edge does not include any major new features, but it still includes 24 security fixes.

Let us now show you how to upgrade your existing Edge browser to version 102. If you have deleted the browser, you can install it from the direct download links for different platforms given below.

Release Summary

  • Complete Release Build: 102.0.1245.30
  • Release Date: Tuesday, May 31, 2022
  • Compatibility: Windows 1110, 8.1, 7 (32-bit and 64-bit), Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android.

Reverse Image Search

Edge has now enabled a reverse image search feature, using which you can now perform a reverse search on the Bing search engine of any image that you see on your screen.

As you can see from the image above while hovering over an image, clicking on the camera icon will pop up the reverse search results in a separate bar on the right of the browser. However, you can disable this feature by clicking on the ellipses (3 dots) below the camera icon.

Note that this feature only works whilst using Edge in full-screen mode.

Security Improvements

The security vulnerabilities addressed in this update mostly affect Chromium, which is now the core of the Edge browser. However, 3 security fixes are specific to the Edge browser only, which are:

New Group Policies

The following group policies have also been added for an administrator to manage more conveniently:

  • AllHttpAuthSchemesAllowedForOrigins – You can configure this policy to generate a list of origins that allow all HTTP authentication.

  • OutlookHubMenuEnabled – This group policy lets you enable or disable access to the Outlook menu.

  • NetworkServiceSandboxEnabled – A new group policy to enable or disable the network service sandbox in the browser.

  • UserAgentClientHintsGREASEUpdateEnabled – As the name suggests, this policy gives you control over the User-Agent Client Hints GREASE Update feature.

Download Edge 102 Installers

If you want to use Edge 102 on any operating system other than Windows 11 and 10, like Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Linux, MacOS, iOS, and Android, you will need to download its offline installers.

You can download the latest Microsoft Edge installers (including stable, beta, and dev releases) from this link. You can also download the browser in your preferred language, using the tips given on the above-mentioned page.

Use Portable Edge Chromium Updater

If you are using Edge’s portable version, it will not update on its own. For that, a small tool known as Portable Edge Updater is available on GitHub, which allows you to install or update the existing Microsoft Edge Chromium to the latest build available. You can also use this tool to download the x64 and x86 versions from all channels, including the stable channel and the 3 channels from Edge Insider.

Download the tool by opening the Portable Edge GitHub page and then clicking on the link provided by Portable.Edge.Chromium.Updater….7z.

Download Portable Edge Updater
Download Portable Edge Updater

The tool is then downloaded. Extract it and then run the .exe file. Inside the tool, click on the channel and bit architecture you want to download (the versions are also mentioned). In this case, we will download Edge version 102 from the stable channel.

Download Microsoft Edge 102 Portable

The browser will then begin to update (or download). Once done, you can check if the Microsoft Edge Chromium portable 100 is now available on your device.
