Patch Tuesday Windows 10Patch Tuesday Windows 10

It is now time to update your Windows 10 computer since Microsoft has now released KB5014699 which will upgrade your operating system’s build to 1904X.1766. The “X” can vary depending upon your current OS version.

This update has been released as part of the “Patch Tuesday” releases which does not bring any significant features to the OS but addresses several other issues and security vulnerabilities.

You can download and install the update using the direct download links shared below, or through Windows Update. This update applies to Windows 10 versions 21H2 and 21H1. The table below indicates what the build of your OS will be after installing KB5014699:

Windows 10 versionUpdated OS Build
21H219044.1766
21H119043.1766
Updated OS build number

You can check your Windows 10 version and build number by typing in winver in the Run Command box.

Since version 20H2 reached the end of service on May 10th, 2022, it will no longer receive monthly security and quality updates. Therefore, it is recommended that you upgrade your PC to Windows 11 or a later version of Windows 10.

That said, Windows 10 version 20H2 Enterprise and Education editions are still supported and will continue to receive the updates.

Let us now see what improvements have been made with this update, then continue to learn how to install it.

These improvements have previously been recorded for KB5014023 and KB5014023 (Release Preview channel), which have now been released in the Patch Tuesday update for Windows 10.

With these fixes, there are also known problems you ought to consider before installing this update.

Known Issues

An issue with the standalone (clean) installation of Windows 10 with this update is causing Microsoft Edge Legacy to be removed. However, it is not being replaced by the new Chromium-based Edge. This occurs only when Windows has a custom offline media or an ISO image installed that does not include the 29th March 2021 SSU update.

Microsoft suggests that you either install the March SSU update through slipstreaming or simply update an existing OS through Windows Update, so you will not be facing this issue. Alternatively, you can simply download and install the new Microsoft Edge if you have already encountered this problem.

Another issue that users might face with this update is that they are unable to install it entirely. This may be because of a previously installed update KB5003690. If that is the case, you can find a workaround for it here in Microsoft’s post.

Some users might be unable to use the Snip & Sketch tool as it may fail to open or not capture the screen at all. Even the keyboard shortcut to open the tool isn’t working (Windows Key + Shift + S). There is currently no fix for it, but will hopefully be addressed in a future update.

Let us now see how to download and install this update.
