Windows 11 KB5034123 Brings Dynamic Lock Screen Weather Widget, Fixes Known Wi-Fi Issue

Patch Tuesday Windows 11Patch Tuesday Windows 11

It is time for the first Patch Tuesday release of the year from Microsoft , and Windows 11 versions 23H2 and 22H2 have received KB5034123. This update includes minor improvements and fixes, where the majority are only fixes. This is because Windows 11 did not receive an optional non-security update last month due to the holiday season.

Installing KB5034123 upgrades the OS builds to 22631.3007 and 22621.3007 for Windows 11 23H2 and 22 H2, respectively.

The highlight of this update is that it includes a dynamic and interactive weather widget on the lock screen, which will expand and show the full weather forecast using MSN weather when clicked upon.

Additionally, KB5034123 also addresses a total of 53 security vulnerabilities, out of which only 1 is of critical importance, and Microsoft has also published 2 security advisories. The security patches focus on Remote Code Execution, Information Disclosure, Elevation of Privilege, as well as Denial of Service.

What’s new in KB5034123

The most highlighted change in KB5034123 is the inclusion of a new weather widget on the lock screen. After installing KB5034123, I noticed that it has not yet been rolled out since Microsoft plans to deliver it gradually to the users over the next week.

This new widget will be an interactive and intuitive weather widget, giving a richer look to the lock screen. After clicking on the weather card and signing in, the full forecast will appear in MSN weather.

To get the latest weather widget on the lock screen, go to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen, and select “Weather” from the drop-down menu in front of “Lock screen status.”

Other than this, KB5034123 also makes a few fixes.

The following list of fixes has been included with this release:

  • This update fixes a Wi-Fi issue where education and corporate devices were unable to connect to wireless networks using the 802.1x authentication. This problem occurred after installing either KB5033375 or KB5032288.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects the spellchecker.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects the ActiveX scroll bar. It did not work in IE mode.
  • This update addresses an issue that causes the device to shut down after 60 seconds. This occurred after using a smart card to authenticate on a remote system.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects the display of a smart card icon. The icon did not appear when you signed in. This occurred when there were multiple certificates on the smart card.

With these improvements, there are also some known issues that you ought to be aware of before installing this update. To learn in detail what the issues are and their workarounds, read the dedicated post linked below:

Windows 11 KB5034123 hands-on experience

After having installed the Patch Tuesday update for January 2024 on my Windows 11 23H2 device, I felt no difference when compared to the older build, as a regular home user. The only new feature that Microsoft added was the improved weather widget on the lock screen, and that is still to appear on my PC.

Additionally, other improvements, like having the ability to use Copilot on multi-display devices were already incorporated in last month’s Patch Tuesday update.
