Just a week later, Microsoft released another Insider Preview build to its Dev channel. The latest build released is 21292 from the RS_PRERELEASE branch. The main focus of this release has been on the News and Interests in the Taskbar which was introduced in last week’s build 21286.

Let us see what improvements have been made in this new build for which Microsoft had to release a new one just a week later.

What’s new in Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 21292

There are no new features in this build, and it would be too early to expect any anyway. Nonetheless, Microsoft has made a lot of fixes to the previously introduced news and interests in the Taskbar. However, as mentioned in last week’s post, the feature is still being rolled out to insiders gradually.

Improvements and fixes to news and interests in the Taskbar

Here is what Microsoft has been working on to improve the recently-introduced new feature in the Taskbar:

  • Some issues impacting performance and reliability have been addressed.
  • The problem of an empty flyout being shown when launching news and interest has been fixed.
  • The issue where the text on the Taskbar button wasn’t readable and some tooltips went missing has been fixed.
  • An issue with news and interests not displaying properly when using small icons has been taken care of.
  • The temporary disappearance of content in the news and interest has been fixed.
  • The issue with the news and interests flyout not minimizing when clicking outside the flyout or on the Taskbar button has been fixed.
  • The occasional blurriness of the content in the news and interests has been fixed.
  • The issue of fresh content not updating in the flyout when toggling the background app settings has been fixed.
  • Users can now navigate into the news and interests flyout using only the keyboard.
  • The issue with the news and interests setting being reset when updating Windows to a newer version has been fixed.

Users will now not only get weather and news updates but also live traffic insights. By clicking on the Traffic card, you can now get traffic alerts, traffic times between cities, etc. All this, with the added benefit of an expanded and bigger map.

As for the weather, you can now see live weather updates directly on the Taskbar without expanding the news and interests flyout.

You can also change your location for weather updates by clicking the Edit location button. You may also expand your Weather card to get the full experience, as in the image below:

Upon clicking on the Weather card, you will receive the following information independently:

  • Current temperature
  • “Feels like” temperature
  • Wind
  • Humidity level
  • Hourly predictions for the day
  • Chances of precipitation
  • Next 10-day forecast

You can also get minute-by-minute processed radar images of the weather around your current location. You can change between the view types from the navigation bar at the top-left.

Other fixes in Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 21292

We have already discussed the fixes and improvements within the news and improvement in the Taskbar. Now let’s discuss what else has been fixed throughout the Operating System.

  • You can now opt to receive a message when the microphone permissions are turned off for the entire system. This option can be enabled from Settings -> System -> Sounds.
  • Improvements have been made to the 64-Bit emulation on ARM64. Several issues with the following apps have been addressed:
    • Zwift
    • Serif Affinity Photo
    • Your Phone app
    • Steam
  • The issue resulting in the error “Critical Error: Your Start menu doesn’t work” for some insiders has been fixed.
  • The issue where the File Explorer was hanging has been addressed.
  • The issue where NTFS was logging false-positive torn write events has been fixed.
  • The issue resulting in Microsoft Teams and other apps displaying as “Program” instead of the app name in the Startup tab of the Task Manager has been fixed.
  • The issue of being unable to assort processes in the Task Manager due to its Status has been addressed.
  • The notifications suddenly disappearing after using the Windows key + Shift + S right after resetting the PC have been fixed.
  • The computer going into an unresponsive state when launching the Xbox Game Bar with a text editor open has been fixed. The problem was first identified in build 21286.
  • The issue of the open windows being unexpectedly large upon clicking the Task View button with the scaling greater than 100 percent has been addressed.
  • An issue with the Japanese IME not taking into consideration whether it is in full-width mode or half-width mode when pressing the “-” on the keypad has been fixed.
  • Another issue relating to the Korean IME has been fixed.

Known issues

As with every new build in the Dev channel, this update also has a few issues that Microsoft is aware of. Here is a list of those known problems:

  • Microsoft is aware of an issue with some games crashing or hanging, such as State of Decay 2, Assassin’s Creed, etc.
  • Microsoft is working on the problem of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War not launching after the new build has been installed. Microsoft suggests pausing your insider updates if you play any of these games.
  • Users may experience some graphical issues when resizing the window of certain apps.
  • Some 32-Bit systems may lose network connectivity after a while of installing this update. Microsoft suggests pausing the Insider update if this is a significant problem for the user.
  • Users may experience low frame rates while using Miracast.
  • The update process hangs for extensive periods of time when installing the new build.
  • Aero Shake is disabled in the new build by default. It can be enabled by creating a new DWORD (32-Bit) Value by the name “DisallowShaking” with Value Data of 0 at the following location:
  • Live previews for pinned sites in the Taskbar have not yet been published for all insiders. Hence, users might see a blank or grey image when they hover their mouse over the Taskbar’s thumbnails.
  • Microsoft is currently working on enabling a new taskbar experience for insiders. However, users can unpin the pinned sites from the taskbar, remove them from Microsoft Edge by going to the edge://apps page, and then re-pin the sites.
  • News and interests:
    • Installing this new build will reset it to “Show icon and text.” However, Microsoft assures that this has been fixed for later builds.
    • Often the news and interests window cannot be closed using a touch/pen
    • The flyout uses more space on the taskbar than expected.
    • The flyout can display stale information at times when the user signs in.
    • Initially, the content is displayed in a single column which then switches to a double-column layout.
    • Higher screen resolution makes the text look pixelated.
    • The Taskbar’s context menu and news and interests flyout overlap.
    • Sometimes the news and interests utilized 100 percent CPU upon the first launch.
    • The flyout dismisses itself when attempting to share the content.
  • Insiders who had installed Qualcomm Adreno graphics driver on their Surface Pro X may experience lower brightness levels.

Most of these issues have been carried forward from the last build, and Microsoft has not seemed to solve them yet.
