Microsoft has now released a new build for their upcoming Windows 11. If you are on the Windows Insider Dev channel, you will be excited to hear that the new Windows 11 build 22458.1000 has been released. This update brings about a few fixes for the operating system. However, it does not introduce any new features right now.

It will be a little while before major new features show up. However, this build includes a good set of improvements and bug fixes.

Microsoft

Since the Dev channel is now receiving flights from the RS_PRERELEASE again, it now receives more builds as compared to the other channels.

You don’t need to worry if you don’t want a new build right now, as this update will only be installed if you manually allow it. Let us now discuss what fixes this build brings, and whether or not there are any issues with it that Microsoft still needs to address.

New fixes and improvements

Microsoft has made fixes and improvements to several areas and aspects within Windows 11 . Before we dig in, let us not forget to highlight a feature that was introduced in the previous build 22454 where Microsoft added a link to the sign-in options in the power menu in Start. Since Microsoft forgot to mention this feature in their last post, they decided to announce it with build 22458.

Other fixes include:

  • The reliability of the Start Menu has been improved.
  • Any folders with a # in their name can now be indexed.
  • The occasional crashing of the Settings app when trying to access the Display page has been addressed.
  • The correct page now opens when clicking the “More about refresh rate” on the Advanced Display Settings page.
  • Whilst the location service settings are greyed out on the Location page within the Settings app, the problem with the text not appearing stating the reason for it to be greyed out has been resolved.
  • Any changes made to preferences under Manage App Execution Alias in the Settings app are now preserved.
  • Several typos have also been fixed.
  • An issue where using the ALT + Enter shortcut keys to switch between full screen and windowed screen while gaming with Auto HDR enabled would cause the game to crash has been fixed.
  • An issue that was causing text truncation in the Encrypted File System window in some cases has been addressed.
  • The occasional reappearance of an in-box app that was deleted after a reboot has been fixed.
  • The Appx commandlets will now work with PowerShell 7.0 and above.

Microsoft states that some of these fixes may not reach you right now, but they will once Windows 11 is officially released on 5th October 2021.

Known issues

Like every unfinished product, Windows 11 build 22458 has some pending issues that hopefully Microsoft will address along the way.

  • Microsoft is currently working on a fix for an issue that may cause some Surface Pro X’s to bug check with a WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR.
  • Some devices are experiencing a DRIVER_PNP_WATCHDOG bugcheck while trying to update their systems to a newer build.
  • Users may not always be able to enter text when using Search from the Start Menu or the Taskbar. In such a case, Microsoft suggests to open Run using the Windows Key + R shortcut keys and then close it, while they work on a permanent fix.
  • The System option may not be available when right-clicking on the Start Menu (Win + X).
  • The icons within the Taskbar are shifted to a side when in the default center alignment. They are often cut off when too many apps are open at once.
  • The Taskbar occasionally flickers while switching input methods.
  • The Search panel may not open at times from the Taskbar. In this case, try restarting Explorer.exe.
  • The search panel may appear black and not display any content under the search box.
  • Right-clicking the files in OneDrive locations in File Explorer will sometimes dismiss the context menu when you hover over entries that open sub-menus, such as “Open with.”
  • The Widgets board may appear empty at times. Microsoft suggests you sign out and then sign back in if you face this problem.
  • The widgets may appear of the wrong size on an external display.
  • Windows Sandbox may not launch after installing this build.
  • Some users may see irrelevant search results while using Search in the Microsoft Store.
  • Both WSL2 and Hyper-V may not work on this build on ARM64 devices.
