What’s New in Google Chrome 114

Redesigned Google Password Manager

Google is now finally adding its standalone product known as “Google Password Manager” which will now be available directly from the overflow menu.

The Google Password Manager has the capabilities of any typical password manager, that stores your credentials in a safe place. You can now access this password manager directly from the Chrome menu. However, this feature needs to be enabled from the following Chrome flag:

chrome://flags/#password-manager-redesign

Enable this flag and relaunch Chrome to get the Google Password Manager in Chrome 114’s overflow menu.

Now, you can click on the 3 dots in the top right corner of the browser and access the Google Password Manager.

Automatic Verification for CAPTCHA

CAPTCHAs can be annoying when you have to select certain images and verify that you are, in fact, a human. However, they are still important to prevent cyberattacks. This is why Chrome 114 introduces a feature to automatically verify CAPTCHAs.

Google has added a Private State Tokens API that allows the browser to verify CAPTCHAs by detecting that you are a human, so you do not need to do it manually.

This feature is disabled by default, and needs to be enabled at the following location:

Chrome Settings >> Privacy and Security >>Site Setings >> Additional content Settings >> Auto-Verify

Popover API

The Popover API is for Chrome developers, using which they can “build transient user interface elements that are displayed on top of all other web app UI.”

Popover APIs are interactive popups that appear over other web pages, such as action menus, form element suggestions, content selectors, teaching UIs, etc.

To learn more about Popover APIs, refer to this Google guide post.

Other Features in Chrome 114

Some additional features have also been introduced for Google Chrome version 114.

  • Google’s own Root Store

A Root Store is a repository hosted by all operating systems that contain digitally-signed certificates so that the computers and servers can authenticate secure connections.

Up until now, Chrome was using third-party Root Stores to authenticate communication. However, with Chrome 114, Google is shifting to its own Root Store for Chrome. The shifting process isn’t entirely complete, but we may see this transition in the next Chrome versions.

  • Automatic detection and suggestion of typos in URL

A type is when you accidentally misspell a word or words. Google Chrome can now automatically detect this when you make a typo in a URL in the Omnibox, and auto-suggest corrections so you do not waste time manually correcting it.

These are the significant new changes and improvements to the Chrome browser. Let us now continue to see how to install and upgrade to Chrome 114.

Update to Chrome 114

Google Chrome is configured to be updated automatically by default. You can keep browsing the internet while Chrome downloads the newest version for you. It gets installed when you restart the browser.

Note: The browser closes when you click Relaunch and then reopens, restoring all closed tabs.

The browser will now close and reopen. Once it does, you can navigate to the About Google Chrome page again and confirm that it has indeed been updated to version 114.
