Avast Free Antivirus

Avast Free Antivirus
Avast Free Antivirus

As the name implicates, Avast Free Antivirus is a freeware, and the only free product by Avast, to be used for non-commercial use. It protects your computer or mobile from online threats and prevents malicious content from being opened or downloaded.

It also performs deep scans of your device to look for and mitigate threats. It also comes with its own firewall to keep your device secure from the rest of your network.

It has a built-in Wi-Fi Analyzer that also scans the network you are connected to and lets you know whether it is safe to browse, shop, and communicate over the network. It also includes a ransomware shield, which protects your files and folders from ransomware attacks.

Furthermore, the free version also provides email security and alerts you in case of an unsafe web link, blocks malicious downloads, and prevents you from opening suspicious email attachments.

However, one caveat is that some features are locked and are only available in the premium editions.

Avast Premium Security

Avast Premium Security
Avast Premium Security

Avast Premium Security is a paid version of antivirus software. It offers all components, as in Avast Free Antivirus as discussed above, and much more. This premium version unlocks all the features locked to the free edition.

If you have already installed Avast Free Antivirus on your PC, installing Avast Premium Security will automatically replace it.

Premium Security is offered for individual devices, as well as 10 collective devices. These are monthly subscription-based products that you have to pay for. However, the single-device version comes with a 30-day trial period, without having to enter your credit card information at all.

Furthermore, you can extend this trial period by another 60 days once the software has been installed. However, this extension requires you to enter your credit card details in advance.

The Premium Security software offers real-time Wi-Fi security alerts. Although the free version has a Wi-Fi Analyzer, the premium version gives you real-time prompts if a threat is detected on your network.

Avast Premium Security also provides a Sandbox feature, where you can run apps and programs in an isolated environment if you think it may contain a virus. Not only that, but the software also prevents attackers from hijacking your DNS or exploiting your Remote Desktop services if enabled.

You can also enhance your privacy by deleting data using the data shredder, and protecting your passwords saved in the web browsers with the password protection feature.

People are often paranoid that their webcams may be hacked, and people are looking at them using the camera. With the webcam shield, you are also protected visually.

After downloading and installing Avast AntiTrack Premium, you will be asked to download and install a browser extension. The following browsers are supported with this Avast product:

  • Google Chrome
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Opera
  • Internet Explorer
  • Vivaldi (Not mentioned by Avast, but all extensions valid for Chrome automatically work with Vivaldi)

Once installed, you can improve your browsing privacy directly from the AntiTrack software across all web browsers on your computer, such as deleting cookies, clearing browsing history, even allowing or blocking websites. These tasks can also be configured to automatically run after a fixed time interval.

Final Thoughts

Avast is one of the leading privacy and security software providers known around the world. If you are considering using antivirus and security software on your work or home device(s), we suggest that you begin by considering these 17 aspects before purchasing.

If you opt to go for any of the Avast products, then do not be confused by Avast Internet Security or Avast Antivirus Pro, since these were former software and are now integrated into other products which we have discussed in this post above.

If you want to uninstall any Avast product from your Windows PC, we suggest that you use the Avast Remover Tool as it removes all relevant data and any unwanted files left behind by the regular Windows uninstaller.

Yay offline installers again :-D. By the way Avast has already released 2202.1 for its antivirus products. Here are some points that I read about the changes:

    Notable improvements in the release:
Wi-Fi Inspector Password Hints – Wi-Fi Inspector can now recommend more secure passwords for your home network
Firewall improvements in the UI – We’ve re-ordered the Firewall Tabs inside the interface
Boot Time Scan Results – You’ll notice how from now on you get actual results from scans even after reboots
    Some bugfixes we worked on:
    Rootkit driver BSOD was fixed
User Interface password now works fine, doesn’t get removed after update
    And many more…
The first release of the year! Thank you to our team for the great effort!
    How to install:
    1. Update from your existing Avast version via Settings -> Update -> Update program
